* OH GOD! HELP THIS LOST GENERATION OF PEOPLE AND "CHRISTIANS"

Recently a pastor was bemoaning the fact that the church has gotten off-track, away from the primary teachings for this time.  I understand his very real concern but I have more to say.

First, we need to remember what the CHURCH of our Lord Jesus Christ truly is.  That CHURCH is the collection of all born again, Spirit filled and baptized people in the world wherever they are…in a field, in a business or farm, in a worship service on Sunday or not, on a boat, working in a ditch, wherever.  Its members all should be guided by the Holy Spirit.  They should have and use the gifts of the Spirit.  They should understand the authority they have in Jesus and the divine gifts such as spiritual healing.   They should look with spiritual discernment upon all that happens.  They should realize the times we are living in, the last days just before the return of the Lord.  They should be focused on doing what they can to help God draw others to Jesus.

Notice I said “should” many times.  Sadly, even some in this great true CHURCH with the definition I used of that CHURCH still are not operating in all those things written above.  Some have drifted away.  Some individual congregations may have been guided away from the razor sharp focus they should have on Jesus, the gospel, and his imminent return, being guided by the Holy Spirit in all things.  Certainly that is possible.

On a much larger scale however is that great group of denominations and individual churches that I describe with the small letter word “church.”  These include many of those impressive buildings made of brick and stone and other materials throughout the country and world, some enormous physically.  So many of these have turned for decades to focus on social issues.  They have completely missed the need to be born again in many cases, and in almost all cases save for a few have missed the wonderful Holy Spirit and the reality of his guidance in our time.  They do not preach about the imminent return of the Lord nor do they preach the full gospel message of Jesus Christ.

I would maintain they are not part of the “CHURCH” at all.  When Jesus comes and collects his believers, those going with him will be the true believers, those truly who know him.  He gave several criteria for that which I have written about more than once – the need to be born again – or born anew - , the need to believe in him (meaning serious, serious belief), the need to do his father’s will, the need to believe like little children.  The great missionary Paul gave the criteria of confessing with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in your heart that God raised him from the dead, again the word believing being a serious belief.  I just point out one essential thing here – if someone is your Lord, then you do what he says.  You obey him. He is your boss.  What did Jesus say to you?  Read all he said in the gospels.  And consider whatever else he has said to you in prayer.

So many people have not spent time reading the Bible or searching out the truth.  So many naïve and in truth lost people have forsaken their own efforts and just attend a program on Sunday mornings in one of those buildings I referred to above to listen for twenty minutes to a message of little depth and no life-saving consequences.  They are putting their trusts in the preachers and the little time they spend there.  Yet some of these preachers are not even born again themselves!  How can they know the truths of God in their hearts and teach others?

God is all about heart.  It is your heart Jesus speaks to.  It all has to do with God and you.  One on one.

* SIGN OF THE TIMES: THANKING GOD IN THE MIDST AND AFTERMATH OF THE TERRIBLE AND UNUSUAL HURRICANE FLORENCE

Many have just gone through a most unusual experience – the hurricane Florence.  Extraordinary.  Some will be dealing with the effects of this for a long time to come.  This storm began far out in the Atlantic and from the beginning made a beeline for the Wilmington NC area.  Unlike other storms that historically begin where it started, it did not gradually and eventually turn northward, curving to hit or graze the coast as it moved northward.

No, it persisted and came straight to this Wilmington area.  And once it made landfall, it turned to the south of all things, not north.  It went south down into South Carolina, then turned westward where it proceeded deep into that state before turning northward finally and going near Charlotte NC and on further north, all the while weakening.  It was no longer a hurricane at that point.

Hurricanes just don’t normally behave like that.  This storm acted as if it had a specific target in mind.

This I know:  Once it was clearly identified as a category 4, even borderline 5, storm that was heading directly toward shore, Wilmington and smaller nearby communities made preparation and two days before the storm’s arrival the nearby beach communities declared a mandatory evacuation.  Veteran residents of the South Atlantic coast do not readily evacuate for storms.  They have experienced them before.  They know how to prepare, just like the residents of New England and the severe coastal storms they experience at times.

My wife and I for example do not generally evacuate for a category one storm, one with persistent winds in the 74 to 95 mile per hour range.  We might for a category 2 (96-110 mph).  We made a decision long ago to evacuate for any category 3 (111 – 129 mph) or higher storm.  Preparing a house to endure a direct hit, boarding up or putting up hurricane shutters, getting everything inside, and such is a lot of work and no fun.  And living inside that house during a severe hurricane is no fun either.  It is frightening and terrifying.  People die in hurricanes.  Houses are destroyed in hurricanes.   This is no game.  I lived through a category 3 hurricane many years ago in Texas.  I have no interest in experiencing that again.

Category 4 (130-156 mph) or higher is just another level.  There historically has only been one such level storm to hit North Carolina in the past, the famous Hazel that destroyed 15,000 houses and damaged 39,000 others back in a time in the 1950’s when the coast was much less populated.

The destruction level ramps up greatly with each number.  I remember when we bought our home years ago in the small beach community where we live.  The builder was giving me a description of how to prepare for a hurricane and what to expect for each category level.  When he got to 4 and 5, he just stopped describing.  I got his point quickly.

So when hurricane Florence was close to land and still a category 4, the local authorities put into place all the emergency plans and issued the evacuation order.  People began to evacuate, to go inland to family and friends, to hotels.

Several days before we and many of those involved or following our ministry had begun to pray steadily against the storm, to speak against the storm as Jesus has said we can do.  Remember, he said we can do the same things he did, and one of the things he did was to change the weather.  He also described how we are to speak in authority to the mountains (problems) in life, to order them out.    So we did that.  Many others did too, others who understand and know the authority they have in Christ.

As we watched the progress of the storm to shore from the safety of my sister’s home far inland, we suddenly and clearly saw God at work. In about a full day or so just before landfall, the storm dropped in intensity from a category 4 to a category 3, then to a category 2.  We all persisted in Jesus’ name in ordering the storm to diminish in power along with other things.  Then just before it hit, it dropped all the way to 90 miles per hour winds, a category 1!  As it hit the winds were at that general level, from about 90 to 100 miles per hour!  Praise God!

We would have stayed home for that storm if we had known it would have been at that level.  So would many of the others who left under the mandatory evacuation.  In fact, there would have been no mandatory evacuation order.

Now as the storm with its greatly reduced wind strength continued on its course once ashore, we have all seen what turned out to be the real horror of this storm, the excessive rain that caused the rivers to rise and eventually significant floods that have greatly impacted communities living along rivers or in low lying areas in large regions of the country.  This flooding continues to be a major calamity.  People have died.  Property in those flood areas has been greatly destroyed, as has property affected by the wind when it first came ashore.

But focus on this:  If Florence had come ashore as a category 4 hurricane, we would not be talking today about cleaning up Wilmington and the surrounding beach communities.  We would be talking about major devastation.  I’m not sure how many houses would be left in those communities or just what Wilmington and the North Carolina and South Carolina coast would look like at all. 

The deadly flooding is terrible indeed, and we all must continue to pray against this, to order the water to subside in Jesus’ name, and to pray for those impacted by the flooding. 

And we should and must also strongly thank God for the great diminishing in power of this storm.  That was clearly God’s hand in action.

If there is a next time like this, we should all again pray against the storm, ordering it away, ordering it to diminish in power and dissipate, all in Jesus’ name.  And we obviously should add to that speaking against excessive rain and against flooding in Jesus’ name. 

As for our community, our home had no damage from the storm.  Apparently, our neighbors also had no significant damage, as did most of the town in which we live.  Praise God!  Thanks to God!  And in general, God saved much of the coastal area of Wilmington NC and surrounding communities, even as all work there to restore the area back to normal and even as we all check to see what highways are open and which are flooded.  There could have been almost no such coastal area.  That did not happen.

TIME TO STAND AGAINST HURRICANE FLORENCE

The Southeast United States is being threatened by Hurricane Florence, which is still way out at sea as I write this.  The weathermen have drawn all sorts of threatening paths it might follow.

But we believers know what Jesus said in John 14, that those who have faith can do the same things he did, even greater.  He said that he would do whatever we ask him in his name.  He also said over in John 16 that Father God will give us whatever we ask him in Jesus’ name.

So I ask now everyone wherever you are to use these truths to pray against this storm, to take a stand.  (I personally like to step outside and face east to do this, raising arm and hand with palm to the east, to the Atlantic ocean.) 

All of you should declare: 

In Jesus’ name, I order the hurricane named Florence to turn aside from land, to go out to sea and to diminish and disappear.  In Jesus’ name, I order that storm to touch no land and harm no people and no boats!

Be bold!  You can put this in your own words, but that is what Jesus said we could do.  Remember, he changed the weather.  He stopped storms.

We have certainly seen hurricanes turn aside in the past when we and others took that bold stand and action in Jesus’ name, and we have faith and expect that now. 

Do it now!

*SIGN OF THE TIMES: GOD HELP US!

We are living amidst such deception, delusion, and lies.  Confusion abounds.  Such an unpleasant environment for true believers in the Lord.

Yes, there are still true Christians out there.  Yes, there are still true believers in Jesus.  Yes, there are those who seek to follow God all the days of their lives.

They are just a small minority.  Visibly, a very small minority.

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers…  - 2 Corinthians 4:4 NIV

Ah, yes.  The blinded unbelievers.  We see them so prevalent in our world today.  They occupy many positions of influence in the secular world in government, media, entertainment, even the religious arena.  But there is even more.  Consider this:

People are perishing because they have refused and do refuse to love the truth.  They reject the truth. What truth? That Jesus is the son of God, that he is the king of kings, that he is the only hope we people have and the savior of the world.  And what is God’s response in these last days to these people who actively and intentionally refuse to believe the truth?  He sends them a delusion so that they will believe the lie (their false views of the world) and so that they will be condemned.  People who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness are condemned (see 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12).

So, delusion added to deception.  No wonder we see such rampant disregard of the truth, of God’s law, of Jesus among so many in our world. 

·     -  There are the violent groups, those who demonstrate and even turn to violence to make their immoral and uncivil complaints.  Many media and political leaders support their tragic actions.

·      -  And there are the loud and vocal leaders from the entertainment world, speaking out from a base of ignorance and misleading the many who treat these people as great icons, as persons worthy of following.

·     - And there are the confused and lost religious leaders, those who have fallen away from seriously following Christ and the Bible and have turned more to community, social, popular discussions and leadership.  They seem to have no difficulty in ignoring God’s word and moving their church organizations to actions where they not only do not follow God’s word but are in active revolt against it.

 

In my writing and speaking over the years, I have focused on Jesus and the gospel.  And I have focused on the entire Bible.  And of course on all God has said to me and led me to do.  I have resisted pointing out the specific false, deceived, deluded leaders by name and the masses referred to above as I have expected all believers to be able to recognize them.  If you are born again, if you have the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit, then surely you can see and discern for yourselves these lost individuals.  And if you are not born again you have an even bigger concern and you should seriously be seeking Jesus right now.  If you are a believer who does not have the Holy Spirit and his great gifts, then begin seeking that right now.  Peter made the point the Holy Spirit is for everyone.  Ask a serious Spirit-filled believer to pray for you to receive.

Surely all believers can readily see and identify these many false leaders I have referred to.  In the religious world, those organizations and leaders that conduct formal marriages of homosexuals and allow homosexuals to fill the positions of clergy certainly fit this role and are easy to identify.  So too you should be concerned with leaders who want to ignore words of Jesus or do not teach what he said about who gets into his Kingdom.  Or who just patently ignore whole sections of the Bible and seem much more interested in building church membership and dealing with the cultural issues rather than focusing on the crucial question of being saved and having a future with the Lord.  Or who clearly oppose Israel and take action to support enemies of Israel!

If you attend a church where the Holy Spirit and receiving that Spirit is not actively taught and practiced, ask the pastor why not.  If the gifts of the Spirit are not taught, ask why not.  If persons are not truly healed as part of the ongoing conduct of the church, ask why not.  And if your authority in Christ is not taught, ask why not.  If you are not taught what Jesus said you could do in him, ask why not.  And if the imminent return of the Lord is not taught, ask why not.  If you don’t get an excellent answer to these questions (such as we are beginning to do this now), then rush to get out of that place and find a group of true believers in Jesus to be with.  That may not be a formal brick building but it may actually be with a few real believers! 

In my speaking and writing and such, I have generally often not pointed out all the specific terrible sinful steps and actions of the lost leaders referred to above.  Maybe a few times, but not often.  It is just sickening to do so.  And again if you are a true believer, you can identify all this yourself and take steps to avoid as possible.  For those of you who cannot understand what I am referring to, I have attached at the end of this piece a list of some headlines from recent weeks I have selected because they represent a cross-section.  We could compile such a list every day.  Maybe after you read the list you might like to pray for yourself and your family and friends, for God’s protection and direction.  And for your personal peace.

Some days I get a bit tired of working to get God’s truths out about the time in which we are living, but I will never cease doing so.  It is a calling, an assignment.  Can’t shake that.  The tiredness just comes from the constant bumping into so many who cannot hear and receive.  But as we started this writing with, we see there are just so many deceived and deluded people.  Jesus made the point that only a few are going with him when he comes.  My role – and yours too for that matter – is to help get the truths of Jesus and the gospel out to all so that those God has intended to be in that “few” may hear the truth.

* TIME FOR SOME CLARITY! WE HAVE A REAL PROBLEM IN UNDERSTANDING!

Right now.

There are those who look at the United States, bewail the great fall away from God and the great increase in immorality, and then launch into a discussion of the impending judgement of God on America.

And there are those who look at recent events in the world – all the prophecies in the Bible fulfilled in recent years – and they see the imminent return of Jesus and the coming of the seven year Tribulation period.

And there is even a third group – those that look at the surprising election of Donald Trump and expect a resurgence of America.

We need some wisdom and discernment here:

1 – Overall the great move of our time is the move to the appointed Day of the Lord, the end of this age.  The fulfillment of so many Biblical prophecies in recent years after about 1900 years of none of these being fulfilled dramatically makes the point.  We are living in the last of the last days, the time of the end of the current age.  That is just plain cold fact.  Now part of the coming Tribulation period is the pouring out of God’s judgement on the nations.  Certainly that is about to happen.  Part of this end times scenario also is the coming of Jesus to collect his true believers, those who will be with him in the Kingdom.  The number going by all accounts in Scripture will be a small percentage even though the absolute numbers may be large.  Few is the word Jesus himself uses.

2 – Absolutely the fall of America away from God and the overwhelming fall in morality open the nation to God’s judgement.  But – considering point 1 above – is not all this just part of the prophesied falling away of the last days?  The judgement that is coming is not just a judgement on America but indeed a judgement on all nations.  The pouring out of God’s wrath will be terrible indeed, but fortunately and thankfully the true believers in the Lord will have been taken away by Jesus beforehand, for as Scripture tells us we were not appointed to suffer wrath.

3 – The surprising election of Donald Trump and some of the dramatic things that have ensued – the turnaround in the economy, the appointment of a conservative Supreme Court judge, and more – surely are encouraging to most believers and to conservatives.  But please note – has there been any change in the moral character of the society, of the culture?  Has there been a rush to more and more true believers in Jesus?  Hardly.  Nothing like this has happened thus far.  This election seems more of a gift from God of a sliver of time, a short period in which the increasing oppression of Christians in the US has been halted for the moment and they are free to do whatever they will to get the gospel and the return warning out to more and more here and in the world.  Without that election would not America already be at least like Canada in which the free speech of pastors has been greatly restricted? Probably far worse.

This seems to be a short period, a moment here at the end of the age.  And then it will be gone.  Make America Great Again is a good political slogan, but America is not moving to be great again in that popular sense.  It has fallen so terribly far.  The immorality of the country is disastrous, and it peddles that immorality to the world in its movies and television programs, its pornography, and more.

SO IN CONCLUSION

With the surprise presidential election of nearly 2 years ago, we believers have the opportunity to get out there more and more with the message of the gospel and to do all we can here and around the world as God guides us.  For a sliver of time.  A moment.

But the end of the age is upon us.  It will all happen at the appointed time.  God has a plan, his plan.  He has had it for a long time.

And yes judgement will fall on America, as it will in fact fall on the world.  All as part of the increasingly hard times as we approach the Day of the Lord and then specifically in the Tribulation period.

It all ties together.  It works.

America is not going to be “great again” in the sense many think and not at this time.  Perhaps in the millennium that follows?  Well, we don’t know much about that, do we.

* GOD MOMENT: THE RICOCHET HEALING!

A man and his fiancée had been coming to our weekly programs for several weeks.  One night during the prayer time at the end of the service, they both came forward for healing prayer for her back.

The next week before the program began I saw the man standing at the back of the room and waving for me to come to where he was. So I did. He had a praise report. He had been healed of hemorrhoids, which he had not even mentioned when we had prayed for his fiancée the previous week!  He was thrilled by the healing but a bit embarrassed to describe it to everyone present, although later that night after the praise and worship music he could not contain himself and shared with those present.  He also did mention to me privately that his fiancée was upset she had not been healed.

I call this our ricochet healing, as if the prayer bounced off the fiancée and hit the man. But really, of course, what we see is his faith in Jesus and in healing, and Jesus' compassion for his specific problem.
